Resumen del proyecto: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease of high and increasing prevalence (5-10% of the population), morbidity and mortality (4th cause) worldwide. Snuff consumption is the primary responsibility for its development, but only 20-25% of smokers actually develop it. This could be explained by the action of different candidate genes involved in cell signaling and modulation of the inflammatory response to snuff. Furthermore, during evolution of COPD and in late-stage can occur complications as chronic respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension and cardiovascular problems (25-50% cases). These phenomenons are most evident in a subgroup of patients who may have genetic susceptibility.
The aims of this research focus in the advance in knowledge about the phenotypic and progression and incidence of COPD. Moreover, identifying a biomarker panel for easy access and low cost could be applied I clinical practice and orient us toward a cardiovascular risk phenotype, implying a possible diagnostic and therapeutic management of this subgroup of patients.
